A unique terroir: the vineyards overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aeolian Islands, while the highest active volcano in Europe watches over in the background. Climate, wind and traditions complete a scenery that gives life to wines from the small familial authenticity that tells the story and biodiversity they surround themselves with.
The production area of the DOC Mamertino is located close to the promontory of Tindari and the Colli S. Rizzo of the Municipality of Messina and also includes Capo Milazzo, embracing on one side the Aeolian Islands and Tyrrhenian Sea on the other, between the Peloritani mountain range and the Nebrodi Park area, after an area of almost flat land, the territory opens up through a harmonious and verdant, hilly setting where viniculture is most widespread. The climate, particularly favorable to the cultivation of vines, not only has the typical characteristics of the Mediterranean – with mild temperatures and rainfall concentrated in the autumn-winter period – but has some peculiar characteristics that make up a truly unique terroir: the proximity to the sea, the mitigating action of the winds, more modest monthly and daily temperature ranges than those typical of other areas of the Mediterranean basin. In the DOC area, viticulture is practiced mainly on the lands located along the hilly slopes, interspersed with relatively extensive terraces.

The topography of the production area, for the most part hilly, and the favorable exposure of the vineyards – often cultivated on large terraces in the high hills or in small valleys surrounded by the mountainous reliefs that characterize the terroir of the DOC – combine to determine a unique environment: well ventilated, bright and with good natural drainage (which is why emergency irrigation is not practiced), particularly suited to the cultivation of vines, and also thanks to the great temperature variations between day and night. The texture and physical-chemical composition of the soils interact in a decisive way with the cultivation of the vine, and so contribute to obtain the particular physico-chemical and organoleptic characteristics of the DOC Mamertino wines. A region surrounded by the Etna mountains and the volcanoes of the Aeolian islands and at the same time, is characterized by important water resources, by a large presence of forests, the Nebrodi mountain range to the west and that of the Peloritani to the east. Elements that give life to a natural heritage that conveys the biodiversity and ideal balance between man and nature, truly mark this region in the province of Messina.
